Waldshut-Tiengen

We had a great week in Waldshut-Tiengen.  We met many new people and had wonderful experiences with our new friends.  Some of our highlights from our week included:

Rotary Presentation at the Rotary Club Waldshut-Sackingen Meeting

Hiking Trip to Feldberg Moutnain, the highest point of the Black Forest.

Trip by Train to Zurich, Switzerland where we toured the town and took a boat ride on the lake.

Hiking Trip to a castle ruin (Burg Wieladingen Castle) in the middle of the Black Forest.

We each had vocational days at various locations.  Tami and Alison went to Caritas and visited several of their locations for social welfare activities, Nancy visited St. Baldien Cathedral Boarding School for 5th through 12th grades, and Shane did a story on Solar Energy in Germany which will be aired on the 4th episode of the series on KBTX.  All series on KBTX will begin on Sunday, May 1st at 10:00 pm.  and will be aired on Sunday's and Wednesday's for nine series.

Over the Easter weekend, our GSE Team had a retreat in Bad-Sackingen where we were able to relax a bit and enjoy Easter with the Sabas Family.  We also had a great tour at night by the Keeper of the City.

We were sad to leave our new friends at Waldshut-Tiengen, but were looking forward to our next adventure in Offenburg.

We have arrived!

April 14, 2011

It has been a couple of busy and exciting days for our GSE team. After our 14 hours of travel we were greeted by friendly smiles in Germany. Jurgen, our coordinator for the week and Andrea, the President of Rotary Konstanz-Rheintor, met us at the airport to take us to our first meeting. The meeting was held in German. Fortunately for our team, we had a German Rotarian at our table to translate for us!

We had a little surprise as the local newspaper met us after the meeting to take our picture and interview a team member. To the reporters surprise, we had our very own reporter on our team, who then interviewed him as well! The next day, we woke up to our picture being in the paper! It only took our team one day to become celebrities here!

Over the past few days we have spent time touring the beautiful city of Konstanz, spent quality time with our families, and have enjoyed getting to know the local Rotarians. We have met with the City managers and have discussed the differences and similarities between politics, budgets, voting, and overall city governance.

Today, has been quite amazing as we all went our separate directions for our vocational studies. We really enjoyed discussing our own professions with our counterparts here locally.

Tonight, we had our first presentation at the Rotary Club. We all did well with our German and they really enjoyed the video that Shane put together for our Team.

I can truly say that the hospitality, experience, and food in Germany have all been wonderful!

Germany is quickly approaching!

We are getting very excited about our upcoming trip to Germany District 1930.

Over the past six months we have learned our presentation in German, created a video presentation, business cards, and brochures to share with our Rotary hosts!

Our team:  Nancy McClain, Shane McAuliffe, Tami Swigert, Alison Prince, and team leader - Dave Johnson

We will update this blog as we are able!
